Nairobi is the capital and largest city of Kenya, East Africa. With a population of over four million, it is the second largest city by population in the African Great Lakes region after Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
Nairobi was founded in 1899 by members of the Abayudaya Hebrew community as a trading centre and grew to replace Machakos as Kenya’s capital when colonial rule began in 1901.

The origins of Nairobi can be traced to 1907 when the British colonialists built a railway station at Kilele Springs to serve as a stopover for travelers on their way to Uganda. The area around this station was then named “Nairobi” after a small river that ran nearby. In 1928, Nairobi replaced Mombasa as Kenya’s capital and became home to many European settlers who brought along their architectural style and culture with them.
The name of the city means “place of cool waters” in Maasai language. It was founded in 1899 by members of the Church Missionary Society, a Protestant mission to East Africa. The town grew rapidly and became an administrative center for British East Africa.
In 1950, Nairobi became Kenya’s capital city as a result of its central role in the struggle for independence from Britain.
